Partners and the Melrose Historical Commission Need: Assist our client, developer Wood Partners, in meeting building requirements set by the Melrose Historical Commission for the adaptive reuse of the Alta Stone Place luxury apartment complex, formerly the site of the historic Boston Rubber Shoe Company mill. Create an exhibit chronicling the founding of the Boston Rubber Shoe Company and its significant contributions to the community of Melrose, MA. Results: The installation comprised of seven panels and artifacts sourced from the original mill. Collaborating closely with a project manager and historian, I integrated images and illustrations from the local library's archives into the design. I opted for a copper finish to complement the historic building's aesthetic details. Mindful of budget constraints, I strategically planned the placement and quantity of panels and artifacts to ensure a compelling narrative. Inspired by Philippe Halsman's 1959 Jump Book, I collaborated with our in-house photography team to direct a photo shoot at our local trampoline park. For a personal connection, we engaged a number of employees (including the CEO!) to have some fun, and literally “jump for joy.” This shoot captured an uplifting experience that genuinely brought joy and anticipation for the new year. It revealed how this connection is diminished as we shift from tactile to digital storytelling methods. Unlike previous generations, we predominantly rely on digital mediums like text, email, and social media for communication and documentation. This led me to ponder: “how can we recover, strengthen, and facilitate the sense of interpersonal connection to loved ones that was traditionally nurtured through the personal touch of handwritten correspondence?” Results: To address this challenge, I designed a nostalgic visual identity for a letter-writing café and digital app that bridges the gap between the dying art of letter writing with the digital world. The app seamlessly transforms handwritten letters into digital format for easy storage and organization. Additionally, we addressed the need for conference room privacy screens that balance natural light and confidentiality for client meetings. Results: I designed a prominent "Welcome Wall" for the reception area entryway, along with graphics for multiple conference rooms, and refrigerator and freezer doors. Additionally, I spearheaded the design and implementation of privacy screen graphics for conference rooms company-wide. I used a distinctive "wave pattern" inspired by the company logo, utilizing dual films on each side of the glass. 40th Anniversary Event Design Client: VHB Need: Create a captivating visual identity for VHB's 40th Anniversary celebration, tailored for a live streaming event, stockholder’s meeting, internal communications, and a year-long social media campaign. Coordinate the production of a company-wide live streaming event to ensure all 24 offices can join in the celebration. The anniversary logo had to work with the existing company logo and be able to support several messages, depending on the use and placement of the logo. Results: I designed collateral with a unified visual identity and logo that extended seamlessly across two events and all marketing channels. For the look and feel, I was inspired by the designs of the late 1970’s, as VHB was founded in 1979. It’s reminiscent of the past while feeling fresh and looking ahead to the future. I designed a “wave pattern” based off of the company’s logo which was created by using two different films, one on each side of the glass. The screens were designed to allow light into the space while providing privacy for sensitive client information. Correllus State Forest on Martha’s Vineyard is the largest undeveloped tract of land on the island. The DCR asked for a wayside exhibit to highlight and bring visitors’ attention to the rare plant species found in the grasslands. Working with a Botanist from VHB to develop the content for this exhibit, I designed the layout and illustrated plant specimens for the panel. I was asked to design graphics for the three giant building columns on the outside wall where there are spectacular views of the city and Boston harbor. The concept was to show clients what we do by bringing the city inside and showcasing several high-profile, local projects.
